Em
1991, após o Mundial Itália 90, a FIFA decidiu organizar uma cerimónia para
homenagear os melhores jogadores do planeta, criando assim o “FIFA Best Player of the Year” em que os
treinadores e capitães, de todas as seleções filiadas à FIFA, deviam votar e
escolher o melhor jogador do ano.
Entre 2010 e 2015 a FIFA e a revista France
Football decidiram unificar os troféus, “Bola
de Ouro” e “FIFA Best Player of the
Year”,
criando o “FIFA Bola de Ouro”.
No
entanto, a partir de 2016 a FIFA abandonou este projecto e criou o “FIFA The
Best” para dar sequência e substituir o “FIFA Best Player of the
Year”.
O primeiro vencedor do Melhor Jogador do Ano, em
1991, foi o alemão Lothar
Matthaus que superou o francês Jean-Pierre Papin e o inglês Gary Lineker.
